In 1983, the DynaTAC 8000x was the first to be approved by the US Federal Communications Commission for commercial use. It weighed two pounds, offered half-hour of talk time and sold for $3,995.00. Now in 2011 we have sleek, lightweight mobile phones that have installed into them dual core application processor, camera, GPS navigation, video, music, up to 6 hours of talk time and up to 360 hours of standby time on the battery and they can be purchased separately for a minimal cost or supplied to you with your mobile phone plan.

Popularity over the decades has increased to over 4.6 billion people using these mobile phones worldwide and as our population increases so will the use of this technology. They are reaching out to developing countries and the under privileged countries where landlines are not available and the human telegraph system is slow.
Mobile phones today are used for a variety of purposes, including keeping in touch with friends and family, business, emergencies, chatting on Face book or Twitter, texting or emailing. Some people often carry two phones, one for business one for personal use.
The five top players in the field are Nokia, Samsung, LG, Apple and ZTE a far cry from the one supplier back in 1973.
