Mobile Phone Technology – From a Phone Line Between Two Poles to a Hand Held Mobile Device

Cellular telephone is often called a mobile telephone, which is a portable device that does not require the use of landlines. It is a type of short wave analogue or digital telecommunication which has a wireless connection from the mobile telephone to a relatively nearby transmitter. The transmitter’s span of coverage is called a cell, so as the user moves from one cell or area of coverage to another area of coverage the phone is effectively passed onto the next local cell transmitter.

A mobile phone can make and receive telephone calls to other mobile phones and fixed line phones around the world. It can do this by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile network operator. In Australia there are two main network operators.

History of the Mobile Phone.

Dr Martin Cooper, a researcher at Motorola, made the first mobile phone call on 3rd April 1973 in a non-vehicle setting. The phone design was about the size of a brick and weighed around two (2) pounds. The life span on the battery was around 10 to 12 minutes before needing to be recharged.

In 1983, the DynaTAC 8000x was the first to be approved by the US Federal Communications Commission for commercial use. It weighed two pounds, offered half-hour of talk time and sold for $3,995.00. Now in 2011 we have sleek, lightweight mobile phones that have installed into them dual core application processor, camera, GPS navigation, video, music, up to 6 hours of talk time and up to 360 hours of standby time on the battery and they can be purchased separately for a minimal cost or supplied to you with your mobile phone plan.

How Popular Has The Mobile Phone Become?

Popularity over the decades has increased to over 4.6 billion people using these mobile phones worldwide and as our population increases so will the use of this technology. They are reaching out to developing countries and the under privileged countries where landlines are not available and the human telegraph system is slow.

Mobile phones today are used for a variety of purposes, including keeping in touch with friends and family, business, emergencies, chatting on Face book or Twitter, texting or emailing. Some people often carry two phones, one for business one for personal use.

The five top players in the field are Nokia, Samsung, LG, Apple and ZTE a far cry from the one supplier back in 1973.

In This World Today Mobile Phones Are Changing Our Lifestyle.

Each generation that is born is being brought into this latest technology where there are phones even for children to enable them to learn the alphabet, numbers, animals, first word spelling, the planets that make up the universe and much more. You can see that it is becoming a vital part of life, not only as a means of communicating between family and friends, but as a teaching tool for our young ones.

So like the humble telephone we have gone from a basic piece of equipment just to communicate with, to these magnificent, sleek ‘smart phones’ that come with inbuilt computers and touch screens for all generations to use.
